Ryan A Brooks Sues Warner Bros. for Copyright Infringement

by ScreenCraft Staff on October 15, 2013

Ryan A Brooks is suing Warner Brothers over the 2012 film "Trouble With The Curve" starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams. He filed a suit on Oct. 1 against Warner Bros, along with Malpasddo Prods., screenwriter Don Handfield, director Robert Lorenz and UTA and Gersh Agency.

According to a Deadline article, Brooks claims in his suit that the film was derived from three of his copyrighted script based off his knowledge of college baseball, written by actor Don Handfield. He claims the film is based off his passion project, "Omaha."

An attorney as sent a letter to Brooks, telling him to drop the case, and included a copy of the script that provided the basis for the film. The letter said the film came from a script by Randy Brown, well before Brooks wrote his script.

In his Deadline article, Dominic Patten wrote, "Officially WB or the other defendants have not responded to the suit through the courts. The studio will only say that 'the lawsuit is reckless and the allegations false.' However, Kline’s email to Fox today calls the suit nonsense and told the plaintiff’s lawyer to withdraw the case from federal court by October 18 or face the legal consequences. The email also had attachments of a $2,500 check paid to Brown for a 1998 option on an early draft of the Curve screenplay as well as a copy of the early draft."

Brooks has worked as a producer on the documentary "Inocente" and the films "Harvest of Redemption," "The Elephant King" and "Slam Planet." He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where he played baseball. His script "Omaha" is based off his first-hand knowledge of the baseball world.

In other legal, but more positive news, screenwriter Andrea Berloff has signed with Universal to write "The Legend of Conan." Check out the ScreenCraft news post here.
