Neil Druckmann to Adapt ‘The Last of Us’ Video Game for the Big Screen

by ScreenCraft Staff - updated on May 31, 2023

A movie based on the popular PlayStation 3 video game, The Last of Us, is now in the works with Screen Gems set to distribute.

Neil Druckmann, creative director for the video game, will write the script for the big-screen live-action adaptation.

The Last of Us was released in June 2013 and has received much recognition. The game won an Annie award for Best Animated Video Game, and Druckmann won the 2014 WGA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing.

The game takes place in a radically transformed world, 20 years after an infectious pandemic spread of the Cordyceps virus destroyed most of humanity. Two survivors, a Joel and Ellie, are brought together by chance to navigate and survive the post-virus world.

“Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention, insisting we go after it, and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay,” Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said, as reported by Deadline. “I am thrilled that SCEA’s Riley Russell was able to get me in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead my case. Sam and his team at Ghost House round out the perfect team to help realize Neil’s vision."

Druckmann has written a handful of video games, including Uncharted: Eye of Indra, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and The Last of Us: Left Behind, which will be released this year.

In other recent news, TBS has picked up an untitled, multi-camera comedy pilot (formerly known as “Clipsters”) from the creators of Will & Grace. David Kohan and Max Mutchnick penned the script and will executive produce the multicamera comedy through their KoMut Entertainment company for Warner Horizon.
