Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber To Adapt 'Me Before You'

by ScreenCraft Staff on October 24, 2013

MGM has chosen Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to adapt the best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes, titled Me Before You.

According to an article published by Deadline, the pair will work off a draft written by Moyes.

Me Before You tells the story a young English woman and a wealthy Londoner. The woman becomes his caretaker after the man is paralyzed in an accident, and both become surprised at how the relationship blossoms over time.

Neustadter and Weber met each other in 1999 while working for Tribeca Prods, where, according to a 2008 Variety article, "in their spare time, they’d go to the Tribeca office roof and 'write stuff down that made each other laugh,' recalls Neustadter"

They are well known for writing (500) Days of Summer (2009), The Spectacular Now (2013). The two are also writing the upcoming The Fault In Our Stars (2014).

In a June 2008 Variety article, Anthony Kaufman wrote "Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber want to bring the romantic comedy back to reality. 'There’s so much better material in your own relationships,' says Neustadter, who grew up in an Atlantic City suburb. 'We’re reacting against the movies the studios have been making about a boy and a girl where the comedy comes from a dolphin attack that’s completely separate from the relationship.'

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. announced in January of this year that it has secured the feature film rights to Moyes' novel. The book has sold over half a million copies and held a spot on The New York Times bestseller list.

In other news regarding film adaptations of novels, American screenwriter, director and playwright Kenneth Lonergan has been brought on board to write a miniseries project for BBC titled “Howards End.” Check out the ScreenCraft post, "Kenneth Lonergan To Write 'Howards End' Adaptation."
