News: Kennedy Explains Difference Between Star Wars "Saga" and "Anthology" Films

by Ken Miyamoto on October 1, 2015

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently spoke about the key difference between the upcoming "episode" Star Wars films and the various "A Star Wars Story" spin-offs. It turns out that the "episode" films — i.e. the upcoming Episode VII, VIII, IX — all share the same story thread.

Kennedy revealed that the core movies are considered the "Saga" films by Lucasfilm, with the spin-offs being called "Anthology" films. What's the main difference between the two?

"The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines, and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe."

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens debuts this coming December 18th!
