Melissa McCarthy's The Boss and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are $45,000 apart from taking the number one spot for the weekend, with the edge in favor of The Boss according to early estimates.
The Boss earned an estimated $23.48 million this weekend, proving once again that Melissa McCarthy is a true box office draw based on her name alone.
Batman v Superman dropped 54.3% this weekend to an estimated $23.43 million. The polarizing film is just short of $300 million domestically, making it the third highest grossing DC Comics release of all-time domestically. It added another $34 million internationally as its global cume now stands at $783.4 million, ranking 59th all-time, just behind Spider-Man 2.
Disney's Zootopia dropped only 25.7% and finished the weekend in third place with an estimated $14.3 million. It is now just $4 million shy of $300 million domestically and is now up to $852.5 million globally.
Universal's My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 finished with $6.4 million for fourth place, with a 42.8% drop in its third weekend as its cume now stands at $46.7 million, which is far from the original's outstanding box office take of $241 million.
In fifth place, STX's Hardcore Henry opened with an estimated $5 million this weekend from 3,015 theaters. A disappointing figure for sure, but not a surprise given the unique first person shooting style that may have turned audiences away.
Next weekend, Disney's The Jungle Book will be arriving in domestic theaters. It did get an early start this weekend in a handful of international locations where it brought in $28.9 million. Included in that number is $7.6 million out of India, the second highest ever industry opening for a Western release, behind only Furious 7.
Barbershop: The Next Cut debuts next weekend too, as well as Lionsgate's thriller Criminal starring Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Costner and A24's limited release of the excellent low budget thriller Green Room.
