News: April 1-3 Weekend Box Office Numbers

Batman v Superman remained at the number one position in the domestic box office with an estimated $52.3 million. This signified a 68.4% drop, which is the fifth largest drop of all-time for a film opening over $100 million, topped only by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2's 72% drop and a trio of Twilight films dropping 69-70%.

While the media will surely push that major drop into the headlines, with big studio tent pole films like these, such drops should be expected. Not every film can be Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The third week for Batman v Superman should be very interesting to watch.

Internationally, Batman v Superman added an estimated $85 million this weekend as its worldwide cume now climbs to an outstanding $682.8 million. The film has already surpassed the entire global returns from superhero films like Man of Steel ($668m), Thor: The Dark World ($644.6m), Iron Man 2 ($623.9m) and Iron Man ($585.2m) on the all-time list where it currently ranks #84.

Disney's Zootopia continues to shine with just a 16.7% drop in its fifth weekend in release, coming in at second place for the weekend with an estimated $20 million. It has now surpassed $275 million, well on its way to becoming only the tenth animated film to gross over $300 million at the domestic box office. Internationally the film added another $30 million as its worldwide cume currently sits at $787.6 million, ranking 56th on the all-time chart.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 fell 37.7% in its second week with $11.1 million. It has grossed $36.5 million thus far. In fifth place, The Divergent Series: Allegiant continues to drastically disappoint with a third week drop of 39.3% for a truly lackluster $56.3 million in three weeks.

In fourth place was God's Not Dead 2, with an estimated $8.1 million — well below expectations after the original film performed so well.

Elsewhere, Eye in the Sky expanded into 1,029 theaters and rose 334% with an estimated $4 million.

Paramount released Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!! into five theaters on Wednesday and bumped that up to 19 this weekend where it brought in an estimated $323,000 for a $17,000 per theater average. Warner Bros' expanded release of Midnight Special into 58 theaters made $581,000 for a per theater average of $10,017. Sony Classics' release of Don Cheadle's labor of love and directorial debut Miles Ahead was the weekend's per theater champion, with $122,751 from four theaters for a $30,688 per theater average.

Next weekend Universal will release the new Melissa McCarthy comedy The Boss into over 3,200 theaters and STX will release the first person actioner Hardcore Henry into 3,000 theaters. On the indie side, Fox Searchlight will release the Jake Gyllenhaal feature Demolition into 550 theaters and Focus World will release Mr. Right starring Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick into 25 theaters.
