New Netflix Streaming Movies for February (with scripts!)

Another month, another set of new Netflix streaming options. Here are some of the notable entries. Click the title to download the script (on most of them).

Airplane!

This classic comedy was written and directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. Created as a parody of disaster films (especially Zero Hour!), the screenplay went on to win a WGA award.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Unfortunately, I can’t find the screenplay for this one, but the film is such a definitive classic of the Western genre that it’s worth elaborating on anyway. The screenplay was written by Age & Scarpelli, Sergio Leone, and Luciano Vincenzoni. Prior to this, Age & Scarpelli were best known for writing satirical comedies. They wrote somewhere around 100 movies. Vincenzoni was known as a script doctor who worked on around 65 movies.

Harold and Maude

This unconventional romantic comedy was written by Colin Higgins, who also wrote Silver Streak and the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

M*A*S*H

This war-time comedy was written by Ring Lardner, Jr., a screenwriter who had been blacklisted during the Red Scare. He was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947, but refused to answer any questions. While blacklisted, he worked under pseudonyms on various TV shows until 1965, when Norman Jewison gave him screen credit for The Cincinnati Kid. MASH won him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Sunset Boulevard

Another classic. This one was written by Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, and D. M. Marshman, Jr. Often considered one of the best movies of all time, it was nominated for most Oscars, but won only Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, as All About Eve swept that year.

The Usual Suspects

Written by Christopher McQuarrie, who won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. He is a frequent collaborator with director Bryan Singer, having written Public Access, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Valkyrie for him.
