News: April 15-17 Weekend Box Office Numbers

by Ken Miyamoto on April 17, 2016

Disney's The Jungle Book opened at #1 with a massive estimated $103.5 million, which is the second largest April opening weekend of all-time behind last year's Furious 7. 43% of the film's domestic opening came from 3D equipped theaters and 10% of the domestic weekend came from 376 IMAX screens.

Internationally the film brought in $136.1 million, bringing the global estimate to an outstanding $290.9 million. With a strong opening and strong word of mouth, The Jungle Book should be have no problem reaching a $300 million and beyond domestic run.

Barbershop: The Next Cut earned an estimated $20.2 million this weekend for second place.

Melissa McCarthy's The Boss dropped a steep 56.9% from its number one spot last weekend to $10.1 million. That's the largest drop for any of her films.

In fourth came Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with an estimated $9 million, dropping 61.4% in its fourth weekend in release. The film has made $311.3 million domestic, but is especially shining with an international total of $516 million. That's an outstanding $825 million global take thus far.

Disney's Zootopia is only the tenth animated film to make over $300 million at the domestic box office. Still going strong in fifth place with an estimated $8.2 million, the animated hit has now made $307.4 million with an amazing global take of over $880 million.

Lionsgate's Criminal, likely hoping to possibly jump on the Ryan Reynolds train after his successful Deadpool, fell short with just $5.85 million. The film, which co-starred Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Costner, will likely disappear from the top ten pretty quickly. Speaking of Deadpool, the film just crossed $360 million.

Next weekend has Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War opening in over 3,700 theaters, but it's already dealing with lackluster reviews (did we really need this sequel?) and the threat of The Jungle Book's second weekend.
