ScreenCraft Winner's Stage Play Produced in Los Angeles!

by ScreenCraft on January 6, 2020

The spotlight is on in Los Angeles, where, after many months of prep and rehearsals, the inaugural performance of the ScreenCraft Theatre Lab debuted at the Second Stage at the Blank Theatre with lots of writers and industry professionals in attendance.

“La Mujer Barbuda”, by Cristina Luzárraga, was the winner of the inaugural 2018 ScreenCraft Stage Play Competition, and ran for three nights to rave reviews and a packed house of writers and industry professionals.

“La Mujer Barbuda” is a darkly comic take on the timeless struggle between motherhood and self-empowerment as a woman. The play follows the parallel narratives of a 17th-century woman who overnight grows a beard, a “mujer barbuda,” and a modern-day airline pilot trying to balance motherhood and her professional identity.

For the first time, talented professional actors brought Cristina’s stage play to life. The workshop production was produced by the ScreenCraft team, directed by Emily Dell, and produced by Elizabeth Dell and Angela Pedraza. At ScreenCraft’s invitation, three literary managers and a literary agent came to the show to see Cristina’s work!

“Playwriting is a leap of faith,” said playwright Cristina Luzárraga, “It was tremendously validating to see talented collaborators rally around my work… Production opportunities are hard to come by but invaluable in refining a script. I’m grateful that ScreenCraft went beyond the standard music stand staged reading that usually accompanies play development workshops—and instead produced the play in full, complete with design elements. I appreciate, too, that the folks at ScreenCraft remain committed to helping me make inroads in the film and TV industries. A career in play/screenwriting can feel so elusive, and it’s encouraging to know that I’ve got people in my corner rooting for me to succeed.”

“There is nothing like the magic of live theater to celebrate the craft of writing,” said director Emily Dell. “La Mujer Barbuda is a unique blend of heartfelt and comic, an unexpected way to address a relatable and contemporary topic. Directing for the stage exercises all creative ‘muscles,’ and the collaboration with Cristina and the actors made the process rewarding, and a great deal of fun!”

“La Mujer Barbuda” was selected from over 650 submissions. Judges included Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole, High Fidelity, Good People) Donald Margulies (Dinner With Friends, etc), playwright and TV writer Chloe Hung (QUEEN SUGAR), Literary Managers Alex Lerner (Kaplan/Perrone) and Justin Littman (The Gotham Group) and more.
