The 2014 Writers Guild Award Winners!

by ScreenCraft Staff on February 2, 2014

The 2014 Writers Guild Awards winners were unveiled last night at a ceremony held in Los Angeles by the WGA West and simultaneously in New York City by the WGA East.  ScreenCraft was the official sponsor of the WGA Awards ceremony in New York.

Two of the three recipients of the inaugural ScreenCraft Screenwriting Fellowship were with ScreenCraft tonight at the awards ceremony in New York.  Unfortunately the third fellowship recipient, Amanda Parham, was not able to attend.

The first awards ceremony began in 1948 as the Screen Writers Guild Awards, which was hosted by AMPAS president Charles Brackett. He noted that there was a “lack of press and public recognition for the literary craft” at the time. When the first awards show proved to be full of jokes and fun from the writers present, the Los Angeles Times named the show “one of the toughest tickets to get in Hollywood.”

In 1957, The New York Times said the WGA Awards were the place to be where the “writers are the only persons in Hollywood who do not take themselves seriously while handing out awards.”

Today, the ceremony carries a much more serious tone as writers have gained more prestige in the industry. WGA Award winners are a good indication for winners of other shows during this awards season. For example, all five of the 2014 guild nominees for original screenplay are up for the equivalent Oscar, as are three of the five guild nominees for adapted screenplay.

Congratulations to this year’s Writers Guild Award winners. The nominees are listed  below, with the winners in bold.
