Watch: New Trailer For "Out of the Furnace"

by ScreenCraft Staff on October 4, 2013

Today, Relativity Media has released the second trailer for the film "Out of the Furnace." The film opens in U.S. theaters on December 6.

The movie is about two brothers, Russel and Rodney, who dream of escaping life in the poverty-stricken Dust Bowl area. When Russel lands in prison, Rodney is lured into a vicious Northeast crime ring. Later, when Russel is released from prison, he finds himself torn between helping his brother and cutting ties with his past. Casey Affleck plays Rodney and Christian Bale plays Russel.

"Out of the Furnace," a thriller film, is directed by Scott Cooper and written by him along with Brad Ingelsby. Previously, Cooper wrote "For Sale by Owner" and wrote and directed "Crazy Heart."

In addition to having a writing credit on "Out of the Furnace," Ingelsby wrote two screenplays for the films "Run All Night" and "Hold On To Me," which will be released in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Cooper got his idea while on a national press tour for "Crazy Heart." He read a New York Times article about Braddock, Pennsylvania, then learned more information about the town and went location scouting.

“While I was here, I popped over and found it extraordinarily cinematic, atmospheric — and the people I liked very much,” he said. “And I thought it would be a really great backdrop for a film," said Cooper in the Pittsburgh Business Times article.

The screenplay Cooper wrote for "Out of the Furnace" ended up being inspired by that town.
