'Squid Game' Makes History in the 2022 Emmy Nominations

And the Emmy nominees are...
by Shanee Edwards on July 13, 2022

The 2022 Emmy nominations were announced yesterday morning and the biggest surprise was Netflix’s South Korean survival drama, Squid Game, which not only made history as the first non-English-language show to be nominated in the Outstanding Drama Series category but also received a whopping 14 noms.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was also nominated in the Outstanding Writing category, which is also a first. It is truly a new era in television when HBO’s popular dramas like Succession which earned the most nominations today – 25, and Euphoria, which earned 16, are competing against a foreign-language streamer like Squid Game. It just proves that audiences are hungry for multicultural stories on a variety of platforms.

When it comes to comedy, it’s perhaps no surprise that HBO’s The White Lotus and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso each earned 20 nominations and will likely duke it out for top comedy winner. But with Ted Lasso’s strong acting performances from Jason Sudeikis (Best Actor) and Brett Goldstein, Toheeb Jimoh Nick Mohammed (Best Supporting Actor); Juno Temple and

Hannah Waddingham (Best Supporting Actress), it’s likely the feel-good sports comedy will again be the big winner this year.

But what about the nominations for best writing? While Succession and Squid Game are top contenders, Showtime’s Yellowjackets is nominated twice for Best Writing for a Drama Series so don’t rule out the female-driven show. While the comedy writing winner is likely to be either Ted Lasso or Hacks, FX’s vampire satire What We Do in the Shadows is nominated for an impressive two Emmys in the Best Writing for a Comedy Series category, and will likely give last year’s big winners a neck-biting run for their money.

Take a look at our list of the top 2022 Emmy nominations below. For a full list, visit emmys.com. NBC and streamer Peacock will air the live Emmy Awards on Monday, September 12th. The host has yet to be announced.
