The Oldest Surviving Short Film in Existence: Roundhay Garden Scene

by ScreenCraft on October 14, 2013

On October 14th in 1888, the earliest existing celluloid recording of a moving scene was shot by Louise Le Prince using the Le Prince single-lens camera, taken in the garden of the Whitley family house in Roundhay near Leeds, England.  The "actors" are Le Prince's family members, shown here walking around in circles and staying in the camera's frame. It shows 24 frames in just under 2 seconds. This is the oldest surviving film in existence, according to The National Science Museum and The Guinness Book of World Records.
