News: March 18-20 Weekend Box Office Numbers

by Ken Miyamoto on March 20, 2016

Dropping just 25.9%, Zootopia took in an estimated $38 million this weekend in the number one spot for the third weekend in a row, bringing its overall cume to $201.8 million domestically, which is the third highest domestic total for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title (not adjusted for inflation). It also brought in another $64.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $591.7 million, which places it just behind the $591.8 million Tangled brought in globally in 2010.

Allegiant, the third film in the Divergent franchise, captured second place with an estimated $29 million. Allegiant's opening marks a 46.8% drop when compared to the $54.6 million Divergent brought in back in 2014. The franchise is now gasping for air upon the upcoming fourth film Ascendant, in June 2017.

Sony and Affirm Films' Miracles from Heaven came in third with an estimated $15 million. The film opened on Wednesday and scored an impressive "A+" CinemaScore and has now tallied $18.5 million in its first five days. Strong word of mouth and the upcoming Easter weekend should allow this film to see some success.

10 Cloverfield Lane dropped just under 50% with an estimated $12.5 million while Deadpool came in fifth with an estimated $8 million as its cume has now climbed to over $340 million, making it the eighth highest grossing superhero movie domestically (not adjusted for inflation), passing both Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.1m) and Spider-Man 3 ($336.5m) this weekend.

Outside of the top five, The Revenant crossed $180 million domestically. London Has Fallen crossed $50 million and Daddy's Home is approaching $150 million. The Big Short has passed $70 million and the underperforming Spectre finally reached $200 million.

Next weekend, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to release in over 4,100 theaters hoping to top The Hunger Games' $152.5 million March opening weekend record. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will release next weekend, opening in 3,000+ theaters.
