News: February 26-28 Weekend Box Office Numbers

by Ken Miyamoto on February 28, 2016

Deadpool is still going strong, holding the number one position once again. The R-rated superhero feature dropped just 44.2%. It is now the third highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time. Deadpool's domestic cume now stands at an estimated $285.6 million after an estimated $31.5 million this past weekend. For R-rated releases, only American Sniper and The Passion of the Christ have taken in more at the domestic box office.

Deadpool will pass Man of Steel ($291m) shortly for twelfth on the list of box office performances of comic book adaptations, and will surely pass both Iron Man ($318.4m) and Iron Man 2 ($312.4m). It will likely pass Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.1m) as well. A huge accomplishment for a little known comic character (in the mass audience's eyes), an R-rated adaptation, and for a film that was almost never given the green light until leaked test footage drew online demand. And the film only cost $58 million to make. The film has proven to be a game changer for the superhero genre, with the next Wolverine film likely going the R-rated route that fans have craved for.

Lionsgate and Summit's Alex Proyas-directed Gods of Egypt brought in an estimated $14 million for second place. The $140 million budgeted feature has already proven to be the first real bomb of 2016.

In third place stands Kung Fu Panda 3 with $9 million. It has garnered $128.4 million domestically. Risen sits at fourth place with $7 million while Eddie the Eagle holds the edge for fifth place with an estimated $6.3 million opening, just ahead of Triple 9 at an estimated $6.1 million.

This is the first weekend that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finished outside the top ten since its debut eleven weeks ago, landing in eleventh position with an estimated $3 million weekend. The film has now crossed $925 million domestically.

The Revenant held the tenth spot with an estimated $3.8 million for an estimated $170.5 million total take.

Releasing next weekend are the animated Zootopia, the sequel London Has Fallen, and Tina Fey's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
