Amazon Set To Produce Three New Comedy Pilots

by ScreenCraft Staff on October 4, 2013

Get ready to see a whole new slew of original content from Amazon Studios, which has recently given the greenlight to three new comedy pilots. The pilots will each run a half-hour and will be available for free on Amazon Instant Video early next year.

One pilot, “Mozart in the Jungle,” is written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Alex Timbers. Another pilot, “The Outlaws,” is written by Jeremy Garelick and Jon Weinbach. The third, “Transparent,” is written and directed by Jill Soloway.

This fall, Amazon will debut two new comedy series, "Alpha House" and "Betas." The company has dramas too, as it recently announced giving the greenlight to a drama pilot of "Bosch." Plus, Amazon has six new kids' pilots: “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street,” “Grid Smasher,” “Hard-Boiled Eggheads,” “The Maker Shack Agency," "The Jo B. & G. Raff Show,” and “Wishenpoof!”

This slew of new content proves Amazon is still in the game, battling Netflix, the current leader of streaming content in the U.S. Netflix has earned its title through its popular, original shows, "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black." But Amazon is a strong competitor.

In a Variety article, Chris Katje wrote about the battle between Netflix and Amazon, writing that the deal which "showed Amazon’s might was its content deal with Viacom, which included programming from Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon. Kid-centric programming is said to be particularly valuable in SVOD; to make up for the Nickelodeon loss, Netflix has signed deals with Disney (which cost $350 million a year) and DreamWorks Animation."
