20th Century Fox Acquires Sci-Fi Pitch 'The Asset'

by ScreenCraft Staff on November 5, 2013

In a rare move, 20th Century Fox has acquired a pitch from Morgan Davis Foehl, who will pen the thriller film The Asset.

According to news reports, the battle for the pitch was tense. 20th Century Fox beat out Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros, who all had producers vying for the film. According to deadline, the acquisition was a "mid-six-figure deal."

The final deal was made between Fox and Ridley Scott’s company, Scott Free. Ridley Scott and Michael Schaefer will work as producers on the film. In addition, Scott Free's Michael Pruss will work as executive producer.

This particular acquisition is rare in that studios hardly purchase pitches these days. According to Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline, "Maybe it’s the fact that sophisticated movies such as Gravity, Captain Phillips and 12 Years A Slave are doing well, but there seems to be a renewed level of vigor for specs and pitches lately."

The Asset follows a former Army Ranger who enlists in order to infiltrate a group of ex-Special Forces soldiers. The dangerous group assassinates confidential informants all over the world and, living overseas, has revolted against the U.S. government.

Foehl has a writing credit on the film What Gets You Through the Night, which was a 2011 Black List award winner, as well as writing credit on the adaptation of the military comic book series Crosshair and the sci-fi film Alien Sleeper Cell. Last year, Variety reported that Foehl is adapting Electronic Arts and BioWare’s bestselling game, Mass Effect 3, into a sci-fi series.

In addition, Foehl worked as an editor for the film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, as well as an assistant editor on the TV film Pryor Offenses and the film Click. He worked as assistant editor on various TV series, including The Loop, Rescue Me and Queer Eye. He also wrote the screenplay for the 2014 film Cyber, which is now in post-production.

Another recent, tense studio battle made Paramount Pictures the winner of the new spec script from writer-director Chris Gorak, a sci-fi piece titled Attach. Check out the ScreenCraft post here.
