2018 ScreenCraft Family Screenplay Competition Winners Announced

by ScreenCraft on April 22, 2019

We are excited to announce the winner of the 2018 ScreenCraft Family Screenplay Competition. Selected from roughly 600 submissions, Stone Cold Crazy Mother Tucker by Katterina Powers has been named the winner and Space Homey by William Maxwell has been named the runner-up.

In Stone Cold Crazy Mother Tucker, when neurotic and isolated librarian, Pam, believes her adult son is being held hostage in a rural Arctic town, she enlists the help of a stuffed monkey and hapless tour guide to save him. Powers impressed judges with her strong protagonist and consistent offbeat humor.

Space Homey follows a precocious boy struggling for attention from his workaholic father. Following his dreams of being an astronaut, the boy runs away from home to see the launch of a space shuttle and sends both him and his father on the adventure of a lifetime. Buoyed by the strong themes of a father-son relationship and coming-of-age, the project also provides a unique insight to the experience of young black men in childhood.

Just Like That by Gene Golus, A Keepsake Christmas by Rich Orstad, and Lunch Lady Land by Jordan Dale also received honorable mention.

In addition to the ScreenCraft team, the judges included: Heather Overton, Programming and Development Executive at Hallmark Movie Channel, Josh Nadler, Director of Development at Sony’s Affirm Films, manager Jewerl Ross of Silent R Entertainment, whose clients have written and directed projects such as COCO, MOONLIGHT, EAT PRAY LOVE, and GLEE, and beloved four-quadrant husband and wife screenwriting team The Wibberleys.

Both the Grand Prize winner, Powers, and runner-up, Maxwell, will each receive cash prizes and have their material circulated to ScreenCraft’s network of agents, managers, and producers.

Congratulations to these winning writers and finalists, and thank you to our judges and to everyone who submitted projects; we read a number of remarkable scripts. View the quarterfinalists and semifinalists here.
