2018 ScreenCraft Comedy Screenplay Contest Winners Announced

by ScreenCraft on September 20, 2018

Stuck by Ian Southwood has been selected as the grand prize winner of the 2018 ScreenCraft Comedy Screenplay Competition. Impressing judges with its fresh take on a familiar concept, its tells the story of Danny, an "anti-guardian angel," who needs Jack to die in order to transcend. His plan is derailed when a suicidal woman finds a book detailing Jack's life and death and becomes determined to save him. The judges raved about the structure that pays off impressively in the final ten pages.

Wedding Season by Shiwani Srivastava has been deemed the runner-up. In a style compared to that of classic romantic comedies like How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and Friends With Benefitsthe story follows an Indian-American woman who hires a fake boyfriend for wedding season to keep her marriage-obsessed Indian family off her back. It's a multi-cultural comedy with lots of heart.

Eat Dead Bird by Molly Miller receives a special mention from our jury. It tells the story of a lesbian woman who heads home for Thanksgiving determined to come out to her family, only to be upstaged her grandmother's prediction of her own imminent death.

In addition to the ScreenCraft team, the judges included: Joseph Garner, a film producer of Hangover Part II & III, Due Date, War Dogs and XOXO,  development executive for Bradley Cooper and Todd Philip’s company Joint Effort with a 3-year production deal at Warner Bros; Joe Farrell, a development executive at Funny or Die Films, the company behind some of the funniest online videos and feature films with access to top Hollywood talent; and Cara Masline, a literary manager at 3 Arts Entertainment, the production and management company behind such celebrated comedy Hollywood talent as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Louis CK, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Hart, Mindy Kaling, George Lopez, Matt LeBlanc, BJ Novak, James Franco, Charlie Day and many more!

Grand prize winner Ian Southwood will receive a $1,000 cash prize and hand-picked industry consultations and introductions, while Srivastava will receive $500 and will have her script circulated and recommended to ScreenCraft’s network of over 60 managers, agents, producers and development executives. All semifinalists will receive a 50% discount to WriterDuet Pro.
