8 of the Best Screenwriting Forums and Message Boards

by ScreenCraft Staff on June 22, 2014

While you can certainly learn screenwriting on your own, somewhere along the way you will need to network with likeminded people, asking for help when needed, and gracefully taking the criticism that comes with the process of learning a craft. Luckily for writers, there is a world of support that can easily be accessed online through several great screenwriting forums.

If you’re looking for help on structure, critique on your script, help with character/setting/plot development, and overall tips/advice – look no further. We did some digging and put together a list of the top screenwriting forums out there. In no particular order:

*List updated on 6/26 based on suggestions from readers. Thank you!

  1. Done Deal Pro - “The Business and Craft of Screenwriting.”
  2. The Black Board - The Official Writing Community of the Black List and Go Into The Story.
”Read. Write. Review. Discuss. Succeed.”
  3. ScriptChat - "where screenwriters chat, share and learn -- it's not a competition, it's a community" also on Twitter at #scriptchat and @scriptchat
  4. INDIETALK.com - “The Internet's #1 Filmmaking Forum - Since 2003.” (a filmmaking community)
  5. Simply Scripts - Forum completely dedicated to Screenwriters. Lots of screenplays too!
  6. Writing Forums - Writing help, writing workshops, and community writing.
  7. Stage 32 Lounge - “From Fade In to Fade Out to all points in between.” Finding a manager, contest rankings, coverage, craft - This is the place to discuss all things screenwriting.
  8. Reddit / Screenwriting - Submit anything screenwriting-related. This is one subreddit where it's okay to promote your own stuff! Just please do so judiciously.
  9. ScriptShadow - Founded as a site where produced screenplays were broken down, Carson Reeves has grown ScriptShadow into a vibrant community for script tips and analysis.
  10. Wordplay - Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the screenwriters behind Pirates of the Caribbean founded this pro-screenwriting resource. While they don't post often, they do have an active forum worth keeping an eye on.
  11. Write to Reel - Definitely worth a look, the forum on this site is smart and user-driven.
