Andrea Abbate to Write and Executive Produce AMC’s First Scripted Comedy

by ScreenCraft Staff on March 27, 2014

For the first time, AMC has put its first scripted comedy into development, which is an adaptation of Andrea Abbate's play, "Random Acts."

The Hollywood Reporter said Abbate will write and executive produce “Random Acts” with Todd Holland and Karey Burke of Dark Toy Entertainment and Kenton Allen of Big Talk Productions.

The single-camera comedy revolves around Katie and Lisa, two single women in their early 30s who work through issues with relationships, family, and growing up in general.

“'Random Acts' will be joined by a number of other scripted comedy projects at AMC as the cable network is set to announce its upfront development slate this afternoon,” wrote Lesley Goldberg of THR. “That announcement will include not only scripted comedies and dramas but unscripted fare as well … AMC has found both critical and ratings success with its original scripted dramas including 'Breaking Bad', 'Mad Men' and 'The Walking Dead.' The move to head into comedy comes as the cabler will say farewell to Mad Men with a split final season.”

Previously, Abbate wrote and produced the TV series “Accidentally On Purpose,” “Rude Awakening,” and “The Tony Danza Show.”

In other recent Hollywood news, Fox has acquired the spec script “Vacation Friends” by the sibling scribe team Tom Mullen & Tim Mullen. Steve Pink is directing the film, while Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are set to star. Todd Garner is producing through his Broken Road Pictures. Check out the ScreenCraft post about the news.
