Today it was announced that Fede Alvarez has lined up his followup to his crowd AND critic-pleasing smash hit Evil Dead remake, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide on a reported production budget of $17 million and is currently tearing the charts up on Blu Ray and VOD:
Fede is in final talks to direct an adaptation of the video game Dante's Inferno for Universal Pictures, which itself is an adaptation of the seminal, world-famous 14th-century epic poem by Dante Alighieri. I think most would agree that there has yet to be a fantastic (and fantastically successful) cinematic adaptation of a video game, but this could be the one to finally break through. Fede's homegrown and innovative aesthetics, tone and visual sensibilities are perfect for this kind of material, and let's face it, the story is a doozy. It's a knight's quest to rescue his love from the depths of hell. Journeys don't get any more epic and stakes don't get any higher than that.
Fede was awesome enough to come out and participate in our panel SHORT CUT: From Online Short to Studio Feature Film back in April and talk about his stellar career trajectory and approach to screenwriting and filmmaking, so we're not afraid to say that we're biased and are rooting for him to knock this one out of the park.
Who has played this game? Anyone excited about the prospect of an adaptation? Sound off in the comments!
